Introduction
Present the essay topic in your own words.
1st body paragraph
Comment on the first point
2nd body paragraph
Comment on the second point
3rd body paragraph
Comment on the third point (your idea)
Conclusion
Give final opinion

Organising your essay writing

There are two things you should always include in any essay.

  • Introduction
  • Summary/Conclusion

We use the first paragraph to introduce the topic and we often include some general comments about our attitude to the topic.

The final paragraph should contain a summary of the ideas discussed as well as the overall conclusions of the essay and any personal opinions we have on the question.

Including the points from the question in the essay

If you write one paragraph for each point you want to discuss it is generally easier to write and easier for readers to understand . While this is not a strict rule, putting information that is related into separate paragraphs is good practice. So, writing about one paragraph for each note means you will typically write 4-5 paragraphs in your essay.

There are two ways you can w

rite your essay.

  • Discussion of one point of view
  • Discussion of both positive and negative aspects of the topic

One point of view

This type of essay presents the notes as a listing. Often we use linking words like firstly, secondly & finally to organise the ideas.

Positive & negative views

This is a traditional type of essay and typically we contrast one or more points in favour with one idea against. Writing an essay this way shows the reader that the person writing it has considered both sides of the argument.  Expressions like on the one hand & on the other hand are used to highlight contrasting ideas. The most logical way of writing this type of essay is by starting with a point in favour of your position.

Planning your Essay

It’s always a very good idea to write down all three Ideas. Doing it like this means that you don’t forget to include one of them. Another reason for using  a plan means there will also less reason for you to write a full version of the essay and then copy it. There is nothing wrong with this apart from writing double the number of words. Generally, in the B2 First writing exam you will have enough time but it’s not a very efficient way of doing it.

The most efficient way to prepare for writing is to write down ideas under each of the notes from the question. For example, if you are writing a  positive and negative points essay a simple grid like this can help.

Some final thoughts!

  • As the essay is a type of writing you will have to do in the exam it’s important to get it right.  Be sure to practise the form and get feedback on it.
  • Do not forget to include all three points.

Introduction

Nowadays, technology is an important part of our lives. We use it at home, in our jobs and when we study. It helps us in many ways to do things better but can we say everything is good about it?

Uses of technology
Technology is important in our work life, especially the Internet.  Without the Internet, companies could not advertise and customers could not buy their products. Furthermore, we can perform typical tasks like emails or calculations more easily.

Easier communication (Your own idea)

It is also true that technology makes communication easier. We can talk more easily with friends and family. With social media like Facebook we know what is happening in their lives, instantly.

Technology for different ages

However, technology is not easy for everyone. For older people it can be very difficult to use and often they may avoid it. It can also be a problem with other things like ATMs and computers, where we need to remember too many passwords.

There is no doubt that technology is a good thing and our lives would be worse without it. Nevertheless, we should also recognise that technology can sometimes make some things more difficult for some people.

The 5 Types of Essays

There are many types of essays (some call them categories of essays), and you will likely encounter several throughout your school career. Although the specific requirements and expectations for each type of essay may vary, there are five basic essay formats that you need to know to write. Let's take a look at each essay type:

Descriptive - Paint a Mental Picture

In a descriptive essay, you give the reader a picture of a scene, object, or person. To accomplish this, you must appeal to all the senses. You must help your reader see, smell, feel, taste, and hear what is described.

When done well, a descriptive essay can be incredibly stimulating and powerful. It can put your reader directly into the scene's heart or experience being described. This is because effective descriptive writing creates a detailed picture in your reader's mind and allows them to experience it firsthand.

Expository - Explain Something

An expository essay is a style in that you must clarify a topic and freely express your opinion. This type of essay is often used in school writing classes to help students express their ideas clearly and concisely. Expository essays usually contain three main parts: an introduction, paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction should state the thesis or central idea of the essay, while the paragraphs should support that idea with evidence and examples. The conclusion should briefly summarize the essay's main points and provide the reader with a final thought.

Narrative - Tell a Story

A narrative essay tells a story with an introduction, setting, characters, plot, climax, and conclusion. In other words, it follows the traditional narrative format of beginning, middle, and end.

The purpose of a narrative essay is to entertain your reader by telling them a story. Unlike other forms of writing, such as expository or persuasive essays, which focus on conveying facts or trying to convince your reader of something, a narrative essay is meant to be compelling. Therefore, it should be well written and have good pacing, with a clear beginning, middle, and end.

Persuasive - Convince the Audience of Your Point of View (POV)

A persuasive essay attempts to convince your reader to agree with your point of view. Remembering that a persuasive essay is not just about presenting facts but also about stating your opinion and supporting it with evidence.

Your opinion should be the focus of your essay, and you should support your argument with evidence. Be clear and concise, and try to avoid complicated wording or jargon. Your goal is to present your point of view as clearly as possible so that your argument will convince the reader.

Argumentative - Explore a Topic and Establish a Point of View.

An argumentative essay is a form of writing that takes a stand on a topic. You must prove your position is the best by presenting evidence supporting your view. Often, these essays are written about a controversial topic or issue on which there are multiple points of view. To make your argument convincing, you must examine all sides of the issue and evaluate the evidence objectively. You must also take a point of view and defend it with argument and logic.

**Note: An argumentative essay is about convincing you to see something from your point of view, so I think this essay could be put in the "persuasive essay" category. However, they (whoever they are) say that argumentative essays require a tremendous amount of research, and all the different viewpoints are considered, concluding that your perspective is correct.

The five types of essays you need to know how to write are

  1. Expository
  2. Narrative
  3. Persuasive
  4. Argumentative
  5. Descriptive.

How to Write an Opinion Essay (With Tips and Examples)

Opinion essays are useful writing tools for sharing your perspectives on complex topics and researching various sources and authors to support your ideas and statements. You can create an opinion essay in a variety of ways, but it's important to maintain a clear and easy-to-follow structure that includes your main points and supporting argumentation. Learning more about opinion essays and how you can draft one effectively can help you improve your writing skills and create persuasive papers for your class or dissertation.

In this article, we discuss what an opinion essay is, explain how to write an opinion essay, review various requirements for writing it effectively, and give you an example.

What is an opinion essay?

An opinion essay is a non-fiction piece of writing where the author presents a thesis that comprises their personal point of view about a particular topic. This essay requires the writer to provide arguments to prove their thesis and to use logical reasoning to support their assertions. This type of essay starts with a question that the writer seeks to answer. For example, What are the benefits of globalization for the developing world? To answer these types of questions, it's necessary to research the topics and develop more comprehensive opinions that can persuade the reader of the writer's point of view.

How to write an opinion essay

Here are a few steps that can help you better understand how to write an opinion essay:

1. Think about the topic of your essay

Teachers can provide you with a variety of questions that can encourage you to think critically and evaluate your own opinion on different topics. Before starting your essay, it's important to understand the purpose of the question and the approaches to answering it. For example, consider the question, Is a video game a useful tool for learning?

Here, the topic aims to explore the pros and cons of using video games as a teaching tool. Understanding the purpose of the topic allows you to choose and research relevant sources to formulate an informed opinion. It also helps you discard irrelevant information or address the topic with a biased perspective, such as from a gamer's perspective.

2. Research the topic

Writing an opinion essay requires data, facts, and logical reasoning to support your argument. You can get relevant information from authors and books regarding the topic or consult websites, social media, and magazines to do so. You can also conduct interviews with experts and read newspapers to gather information about the topic.

3. Create a persuasive and appealing introduction

This section aims to introduce the topic and engage the reader. To do this, you can include any information about the subject that you consider appealing to your audience, such as a quote or a fact. If you do this, it's important to reference the source in the text by indicating the author's name and the publication year. This section comprises the first paragraph of the essay.

4. Include your thesis statement

As you're writing an opinion essay, it's essential to use the researched information to create your thesis and support your argument, rather than simply quoting information from other sources. Your thesis comprises your position or claim on the selected topic and indicates to the reader what your essay is about. Here, it's important to use a clear and concise sentence that clearly describes and explains your argument. Next, provide a summary of your argument to indicate what the reader might find in the body of your essay.

5. Provide arguments and evidence to support your thesis

Provide arguments based on your research and use a logical order to show your point of view on the topic. Instead of writing a list of reasons, you can expand on each one and show your ideas in an organized manner. It's also important to provide evidence to support your arguments, which might consist of data presented by other authors on their books or websites.

Here, it's beneficial to use examples because they help readers better understand your main points, especially if the topic is complex or involves abstract concepts. For instance, if your essay addresses a topic related to physics, it might be helpful to provide examples of the concepts you're discussing. You can use three or more paragraphs to present your supporting arguments, but avoid adding more information than the one indicated in the thesis.

6. Write a conclusion

Your conclusion usually comprises a short paragraph that summarizes your arguments and thesis. Here, you can reaffirm your opinion and emphasize your position, as you've presented all the relevant arguments throughout the essay. This section doesn't provide any new information, but it does provide a brief sentence that answers the question that motivated your essay. It's important to show confidence in your conclusion, as this is your last chance to persuade your reader that you've been fair and thorough in your arguments.

7. Proofread your essay

To demonstrate your dedication and academic commitment, it's important to provide a high-quality document, which requires you to proofread it thoroughly. You can ask a teacher or family member to help you proofread your essay for errors and omissions. You can also use a software program to help you identify and correct errors.

Requirements for writing an opinion essay

Here are some tips you can evaluate to help you write an opinion essay:

  • Use linking sentences. You can finish each paragraph with a sentence that indicates to the reader what they can find in the next paragraph.
  • Use formal or academic language. You can do this by using conjunctions and connectors such as not only, whether, however, or therefore, and avoiding slang words and colloquial language.
  • Focus on the topic. It's crucial to provide information that's relevant to the topic and avoid expanding on examples and references that might lead the reader off topic.
  • Check your facts and arguments. This can help you enhance your coherence and cohesion in your paper and avoid contradictions in your arguments or between your opinion and evidence.
  • Be concise and accurate. Try to use short sentences and paragraphs, as this can help the reader follow your argument more easily.

Example of an opinion essay

Here's an example of an opinion essay on the topic, What is the role of a manager in improving an organization's work environment?:

In any organization, the manager has a vital role in defining the work environment. A manager sets the tone for the workplace and when they promote collaboration, honesty, and communication within the organization, employees raise their productivity and the business increases its profitability. In this essay, I discuss the role of the manager in improving an organization's work environment. Here, I explain how managers can promote collaboration, honesty, and communication to create a more positive work environment and how an organization might benefit from each factor.

First, positive work environments require not only strong leadership skills that enable managers to make decisions and avoid conflict, but also the ability to promote collaboration. Managers can do this by encouraging employees to work in teams, create groups, share information and ideas, help each other complete projects and tasks, and teach each other new skills. By doing this, employees can feel more comfortable and supported while working with their coworkers. Collaboration across departments can ease business processes and help employees complete their tasks earlier, which might allow the organization to create or launch more profitable projects.

Second, managers can foster a healthy work environment by promoting honesty across their teams to avoid rumours and gossip. For example, when a manager promotes an employee to a higher position, it's important to explain to all their coworkers the criteria used to make the decision. This data can prevent misinformation and incorrect assumptions from spreading throughout the organization. When employees can focus on their work and avoid misinformation or gossip, they can perform better, use their time more efficiently, and complete more tasks.

Finally, communication is essential for managing relationships with employees. Encouraging employees to voice their concerns and ask questions about their roles demonstrate an interest in listening to them. Managers can also establish channels for communication across departments and invite employees to provide feedback and communicate their ideas on projects and team performance. When employees understand they can communicate freely with their colleagues and managers, they might suggest more innovative ways to achieve business goals. This can help the organization save resources, stay updated on the latest technology, and improve the overall quality of its products or services.

In conclusion, the manager has a vital role in defining the work environment, and by creating a positive one, they help employees be more successful and contribute to the success of the organization. Promoting collaboration, honesty, and communication can help managers enhance, strengthen, or change the organization's work environment into one that's more conducive to employees.
